The Great Mall Food Court Breakfast Sandwich Challenge
Happy first birthday to us!
To celebrate, we undertook a very important mission: sampling six different breakfast sandwiches from your friendly neighbourhood mall food court to determine which one is the best.
A few words on how we did it. We went to 6 different locations: McDonald's, Tim Horton's, Starbucks, A&W, Subway, and Mama Gratti's and purchased a standard egg, cheese, and bacon breakfast sandwich. We opted for no condiments, and no veggies (where that was an option) and did not make any alterations. While not all breakfast sandwiches are created equally, we tried to keep it as even a playing field as possible.
I enlisted the help of three all-star breakfast lovers to be guest judges in this momentous challenge.
We scored out of a 5 (with one being the worst, and five being the best) based on the following criteria:
- Bread quality
- Bacon quality
- Egg quality
- Cheese quality
- Overall taste
Here are our results:
Overall, it was a two-way tie for first between McDonald's and Tim Horton's. The clear loser was Mama Gratti's, which was a total plot-twist given how it's normally all of our go-to favourite because it's typically SO EFFING GOOD. Like, so good. The stuff you wake up thinking about good.
A&W was the surprising dark horse in this race. Given my thoughts and feelings on their hash brown, I wasn't feeling hopeful. But it was actually surprisingly tasty. Aside from the weirdly yellow yolk of the egg...
Subway didn't get a fair shake because it desperately needed vegetables. And mayo. But mostly vegetables. But also, flatbread. No thanks.
