Q: What's more quintessential than a road trip in the summer?
A: A road trip in the summer on a rainy day.
Welcome to Nova Scotia.
It sucks when it rains on the weekend. Especially when the weather is just starting to get nice. But such is life living on the East Coast of Canada. On a recent Saturday, rather than letting the rain put a damper on the day (see what I did there?) I took to the open road to explore the sights in our own backyard. Or rather, I took to the passenger seat while my ride or die took us on an adventure.
Our destination was the lovely little yuppy town of Windsor, Nova Scotia. If memory—and history—serves me, this quaint place is where Wayne Gretzky first built the Stanley Cup while perfecting his triple axel. Ok, so maybe that's not quite right. But it is supposedly where hockey was created.
We hit up The Spitfire Arms, a quaint British pub on the main drag of town. It should be stated that the purpose of this trip was lunch. But when we got there and they were still serving brunch I couldn't let the opportunity go to waste.
The brunch menu is small, but I decided to keep The Great Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict World Tour of 2017™ going and so, I ordered the smoked salmon eggs benny.
Judging by the quantity of hollandaise, I would say it probably wasn't made from scratch. It was still pretty tasty, just a little too plentiful for my liking (too much of a good thing, etc.). The smoked salmon was mild and not oily—exactly how I like it. And the eggs were perfectly soft poached. The home fries were frozen, but I'm going to say something controversial—I actually love a frozen homefry with my breakfast. I like that delicious crisp outer shell that can only come from the magic of prepared foods.
Service was friendly and efficient, the table was a little sticky like you'll find in any well-used and loved pub, and the place was pretty busy for a rainy Saturday afternoon.
Overall, I don't think I'd make the drive specifically to come here for brunch again. But that's not to say you shouldn't. What else are you going to do on a rainy day in the summer?
